Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Squad While Joe McCarthy Omitted
Returning head coach Andy Farrell has selected skipper Doris in his Irish roster for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy has been excluded.
Doris, absent from play since having a shoulder operation in early May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be fit to face New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.
Second row Joe McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after failing to recover from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.
Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Calvin Nash also miss out because of fitness concerns, while full-back Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having hip surgery following the summer tour.
Leinster prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new player in the 34-player group, but Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and previously capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".
Following playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their previous encounter, Ireland host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in Dublin.
"There's an exciting look to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to Georgia and Portugal," commented Farrell, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.
In a mostly familiar-looking squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again compete for the starting number 10 position. The number 10 jersey is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the third fly-half chosen as the coach deciding not to selecting the province's Byrne.
At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained Ireland to the summer international wins over Georgia and the Lobos. There is also a return for the western province's Caolin Blade, who is preferred to teammate Ben Murphy.
Robbie Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an veteran group of midfield choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, though the youngster is also a frontrunner to cover for Keenan at number 15.
Wingers James Lowe, Hansen, O'Brien and Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.
McCarthy is the only fresh name in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's URC league matches this season and featured in Ireland A's loss by England in Bristol earlier this year.
The 22-year-old was included in interim boss O'Connell's summer selection, but did not earn a cap.
Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, while veteran Ulster second row Iain Henderson is back after sitting out the summer tour.
Conan, who started each of the Lions matches during the tour, is poised to cover for the captain should the skipper does not regain full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in Dublin on the start of the week before traveling to the US on Tuesday.
