Federal Reserve Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank lowered interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second reduction this year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Private Data Show Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was set to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
