This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who enjoy scary movies: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard body horror, but within Together resides a intense examination about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Relationship Dynamics

Together marks the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the country for her career. A commonly used narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions cease. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim fall into an underground cave. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the duo. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding simple connection.

The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he can’t drive and needs Millie for getting around.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions after ten years. At their core, they have affection for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of codependency and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama serve the other symbiotically.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have understood the narrative as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can experience right now.

Together is streaming on Hulu's platform at present.
